from Pastor Tom’s Desk

You have probably never heard of him, but he is the "Most Wanted" man in Islam today. There is a $60 million bounty placed on his head by radical Muslims (to put that in perspective, the U.S. has a $25 million for the head Osama bin Laden). His name is Father Zakaria Botros. An Arabic newspaper named Botros "Islam's Public Enemy #1."

His story is amazing and a testimony to God's Greatness and salvation that He is bringing to the Muslim world. Botros is now in his seventies and was raised in a Christian family in Egypt. While growing up his older brother was killed by the Muslim Brotherhood for his faith. This did not cause Botros to hate Muslims, knowing that he would see his brother again in heaven, but rather intensified his desire to follow Christ. While in High School he had a fanatic Muslim teacher who regularly ridiculed Christians and mocked Botros. These encounters caused him not only to search the Scriptures, but also the Quran.

He was ordained by the Coptic church in 1959 and by the time he was arrested and imprisoned for his faith he led over 500 Muslims to faith in Christ. When he was released after a year's time he continued to defend and preach the Gospel. His approach is very simple: refute Islam and lift up Jesus.

By 1989, the authorities had had enough of his evangelizing and sentenced to life in prison. After being in prison a couple of years the Egyptian authorities made him an offer that was hard to refuse. He would be set free but must leave Egypt and never return. he agreed and moved to Australia, and then to England in 1992 (by the way there are more Mosques in London than in any other city outside the Middle East).

In early 2001 someone suggested that he set up an online conversation with Muslims, and that year his "Pal Talk" was born. The buzz was so great that Botros was invited to have a taped TV show that went into the Muslim world. Botros is now on TV for 90 minutes live, every Friday night at 9:00pm (this is Premium Prime Time for Muslim viewers), with many taped replays into the Middle East. Botros is seen by millions of Muslims each week. He often has guest Imans and Muslim scholars on to debate him. Because of his great knowledge of both the Quran and the Bible, Botros is able to challenge the validity of Mohammed being a prophet, blasts Muslim leaders for their spread of Islam through violence and point his listeners to the One Who is Prophet, Priest and King. Botros' plan is to dismantle the emptiness and violence of Islam, which can be very provocative, get their attention, challenge them to read God's Written Word and point them to Jesus Christ, man's only hope. His main verse in witnessing is John 3:16. Tens of thousands have come to Christ through this man's ministry. Botros is such a lightning rod, controversial figure and wanted man, that Islamic leaders want to know what should Muslim leaders do to have Botros stop refuting Islam and preaching the Gospel of Christ. Botros' response was that he has ten demands that must be met. You can listen in Aramaic (translated into English) on YouTube

to his ten demands. Botros is in hiding with his family and is constantly guarded as he ministers for ChristAs I was reading this story of father Botros, which I share briefly with you and more can be found online, I thought LOOK AT GOD. Look at His greatness, His mercy, His love for the Muslim world and how He is bringing Muslims to Christ in unprecedented numbers. And then I thought that you and I are part of His church that He is building, that the gates of Hell CANNOT stop. We're a part of it, this whole universal, eternal body of the Lord Jesus Christ.

After this I looked and there before me was a great multitude that no one could count, from every nation, tribe, people and language, standing before the throne and in front of the Lamb. They were wearing white robes and were holding palm branches in their hands. And they cried out in a loud voice: "Salvation belongs to our God, who sits on the throne, and to the Lamb."

James VI of Scotland

and I of England

Ruler of Scotland (1567-1625)

& England (1603-1625)

The only child of Mary, Queen of Scots, and her husband Henry Stuart (Lord Darnley), James was born in Edinburgh and proclaimed king at the age of one year when his mother abdicated. He was kept in safety at Stirling Castle; there his tutor, George Buchanan, gave his a good education, especially in languages. Assuming active rule in 1578, James sought to strengthen the monarchy’s power in Scotland. He entered an alliance with England in 1586 and married Ann of Denmark three years later.

When Elizabeth I died in 1603, James succeeded her on the English throne because of his mother’s descent from Henry VII. As James traveled to London to be crowned, he was handed the "Millenary Petition" (with a thousand signatures), an appeal by Puritans for Concessions to be made to the consciences. To discuss their grievances he called a conference at Hampton Court in 1604. A positive result of that meeting was the decision to prepare a new translation of the Bible, published in 1611 and known as the King James Version. The Puritans, however, gained only minimal concessions. Clearly James considered that kings and bishops stood together. He pressed for the establishment of episcopacy (church rule by bishops) in Scotland and saw it introduced in 1610.

Though he intended to be lenient to Roman Catholics, james failed to make leniency an official government policy. Hence a group of Catholics plotted to kill him when he visited Parlimaent in the unsuccessful "gunpowder plot" of 1605. In 1618 James offended both the Scottish Calvinists and the English Puritans over the issue of the Book of Sports, which approved lawful sport on the Sabbath. It was during his reign that English and Scottish Protestants developed the settlement of Ulster in Northern Ireland.

Among James’s writing, which included treatises on the divine right of kings on witchcraft, were several other works on biblical themes (for example, on the Lord’s Prayer and Revelation 20). James was succeeded by his son, Charles I.

Abide in Me . . Jn 15:4

In the matter of determination. The Spirit of Jesus is put into me by way of the atonement by the Cross of Christ. I then have to build my thinking patiently to bring it into perfect harmony with my Lord. God will not make me think like Jesus— I have to do it myself. I have to bring "every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ" (2 Corinthians 10:5  ). "Abide in Me"— in intellectual matters, in money matters, in every one of the matters that make human life what it is. Our lives are not made up of only one neatly confined area.

Am I preventing God from doing things in my circumstances by saying that it will only serve to hinder my fellowship with Him? How irrelevant and disrespectful that is! It does not matter what my circumstances are. I can be as much assured of abiding in Jesus in any one of them as I am in any prayer meeting. It is unnecessary to change and arrange my circumstances myself. Our Lord’s inner abiding was pure and unblemished. He was at home with God wherever His body was. He never chose His own circumstances, but was meek, submitting to His Father’s plans and directions for Him. Just think of how amazingly relaxed our Lord’s life was! But we tend to keep God at a fever pitch in our lives. We have none of the serenity of the life which is "hidden with Christ in God" ( Colossians 3:3  ).

Think of the things that take you out of the position of abiding in Christ. You say, "Yes, Lord, just a minute— I still have this to do. Yes, I will abide as soon as this is finished, or as soon as this week is over. It will be all right, Lord. I will abide then." Get moving— begin to abide now. In the initial stages it will be a continual effort to abide, but as you continue, it will become so much a part of your life that you will abide in Him without any conscious effort. Make the determination to abide in Jesus wherever you are now or wherever you may be placed in the future.

MISSIONS

Thank you for your donations to help Haiti

Our team assessment:

A simple drive through the capital of Haiti corroborates the dreaded fact that the gruesome pictures and the depressing commentaries on TV are quite illustrative of the actual situations on the streets of Port-au-Prince and the desperation of the people of Haiti. There is a death toll of over 200,000 people and counting.  Hundreds of thousands of people have been seriously injured and because some of their injuries were not deemed life threatening, they were ignored.

Some areas have yet to be reached by any relief team.  The capital and its surrounding cities are littered with destroyed private homes, commercial buildings, churches, primary and secondary school buildings, universities and governmental buildings.  This area along with surrounding regions have been transformed into "tent cities." Everyone is affected. Every surviving Haitian personally knows a close relative, a cousin or aunt, a dear friend, a classmate etc that perished as a result of the earthquake. Those that escape with no bodily injuries or even with no serious loss of personal property are still emotionally and psychologically scarred. There is a shortage of food, supplies and water and ongoing medical health problems with a great concern with epidemic infectious problems.  Clean-up efforts have been virtually ineffective. We were able to observe only one site where the debris from a collapsed building was completely cleared. After 20 days, over 95% of the destroyed buildings remain untouched with many dead bodies that remain among the ruins.

This analysis confirms that the large organizations are unable to do it all.  It will take small organizations like ours to pick up where the large ones left off.

The Needs :

The majority of the country is in "survival mode."  One medical staffer that has been to Haiti said that the need there is so great that "everything is needed, even a pacifier

for a baby." This puts it all into perspective.  Some of the needs include:

Medical Assistance-- Care for those with serious medical needs because their cases were deemed not life-threatening or their areas were not reached.  Medical needs may include injuries, infectious diseases, chronic diseases; provide education/preventive tips.

Food and water-- distribution of food is quite ineffective: some areas are not being served in an orderly way.  In an effort to preserve their self-esteem, some choose to stay away from distribution places.

Clothing/ shoes --many lost all their possessions.

Shelter - Tents are needed. Most of the tents in the "Tent Cities" have been made with regular blankets held up with tree branches as seen here in this photo.

Education-- the complete shutdown of the school system in Port-au-Prince, along with the mass exodus of people from the capital will increase the enrollment in school in provincial areas.  School expansion to accommodate the influx of new students due to migration away from the capital.  Support for programs aimed at helping children cope with the aftermath of the traumatic experience-recreational sessions while awaiting re-opening of schools.

Financial Assistance-- Many have lost all their possessions and were able to support themselves prior to the earthquake.  The Ca-Ira Leogane Orphanage which we served in the 2008 Mission Trip, collapsed.  The Director has requested help to meet the needs of the children for food and clothing.  The children have lost all of their clothes and escaped with only the clothes on their backs.

This analysis confirms that the needs are great in Haiti and it takes your donations however small or large to help the people of Haiti.

Thank you for your donation:

On behalf of Amour en Action, I wish to express our heartfelt appreciation for your generous donations. All proceeds generated are being administered by Amour en Action and will be used toward the immediate and long-term needs of the affected people in Haiti, as well as to support the ongoing operation of our school for disadvantaged Haitian children.

We plan to make numerous trips to help rebuild the country. The opportunity to touch the hurting and provide for the needy through the help of volunteers and donors like you is exciting! Please check out our website: www.amourenaction.org where you will see on the opening page last year’s mission video which depicts the services that members of the medical team and support staff provided to the needy citizens of Haiti last year, thanks to donors like you.

Thank you for joining us in this labor of love. Thank you for your investment in the lives of the Haitian people.

Return of the Ark brings new life

Jerusalem,c.1000 BC

The triumphant return of the ark of Yahweh to Jerusalem from storage in the city of Kiriath Jearim marks a new direction in Israelite fortunes.

Crowds of cheering, singing spectators watched as the holy box was carried carefully by oxen through the city gates and into its streets. Musicians and dancers celebrated its return, stolen by the Philistines over 20 years ago. No more powerful symbol of David’s victory can be imagined.

His own exuberance was plain to see. He stripped off his royal clothes and wore a religious robe as he danced without inhibition at the head of the procession. Only Michal, his wife, considered the exhibition ‘undignified’. The celebration concluded with traditional animal sacrifices.

But those who were dancing ecstatically in the streets took acre not to go too near the ark, which is regarded as the most sacred object in Israelite religion. This was proved horrifically true when a bystander, Uzzah, attempted to steady it with his hand when the oxen stumbled, and instantly died.

But nothing can spoil the mood of rejoicing in Jerusalem for long. Following the death of Ish-Boseth, Israel has finally united under David, who at the age of 30 becomes king over the whole nation. He has ruled the tribe of Judah for seven-and-a-half years.

He has lost none of his military genius; during that time he has easily defeated two attempted preemptive strikes by the Philistines in the Valley of Rephaim close by Jerusalem. That was followed by a major victory over the Jebusites at Jerusalem, which he has now made the royal city.

The return of the ark to Jerusalem was an event which outshone even David’s coronation over all Israel at Hebron after Ish-Boseths’s death. The action speaks volumes about his continuing devotion to Yahweh. (2 Samuel5-7)

Ask Pastor Tom

These questions can be theological and non-theological in nature:

Q: How can I read the Bible more consistently?

A: Isn't it amazing that we find time for the things that we really want to do? Think about it... meals, work, TV, sports, shopping, well you get the idea. Having a daily intake from God's Word is important to our spiritual health and being connected to the One who is the Living Word and whom the Scriptures testify about.

You diligently study the Scriptures because you think that by them you possess eternal life. These are the Scriptures that testify about me,

  • John 5:39

some suggestion...

  • find a set time to read the Bible (I prefer the early morning)
  • find a set place where you can be still before the Lord and interact with Him as you read His Word
  • read systematically: (the Daily Bread verse or two will not do if you are serious about reading the Bible) read through a book of the Bible, the Old Testament, the New Testament... but read!!! (for the last few years I have been reading through the OT and NT, when I finish the OT I begin again in Genesis, and when I finish with Revelation I go back to Matthew, so I am always in the Old and New Testament)
  • Time wise I would suggest starting with 10-15 minutes each day, plan to put aside this time to read.

Here then is the real problem of our negligence. We fail in our duty to study God’s Word not so much because it is difficult to understand, not so much because it is dull and boring, but because it is work. Our problem is not a lack of intelligence or a lack of passion.

Our problem is that we are lazy.

-RC Sproul

I recently read an interview with musician and song writer, Michael Card. When he was in High School he began reading a book of the Bible/day... everyday. Not too long if you're reading 2 John, but if the day calls for the Psalms plan to be there a while. WOW!

Get into the Word of God and the Words of God will get into you.

Youth Group

Some of our youth could benefit from earning money and jobs are hard to come by. If you have a chore, yard work, Spring Cleaning that needs to be done contact Dan Schaeffer who will match a teen(s) who is best suited to handle that assignment. Even if you cannot pay for their services, still contact Dan as Christian volunteer service has perhaps even more value.

Contribution towards Youth retreats/events.

Currently we are working on providing headsets for Spanish speaking listeners during the 11:00am Service. The equipment needed is a little costly, but will be worth it. Each person will need their own headset (cost: approx: $200). If you would like to contribute to this ministry see me or Chuck Russo in the Tech Ministry. We will also need translators for this ministry.

2010 Chili Bowl

Contest Winners

A big Thank You extended to all of you who cooked up some really great chili!...The 2010 competition was tough. Like last year another newcomer, Bobby Houston, took home 1st Place in the Chili Bowl Contest. Janet Mason, last year’s newbie, once again went home with both 2nd Place Chili Bowl and Peoples Choice Award. Second in People Choice, and my favorite, was Victor Monaco’s vegetable Chili.

The competition Chili was seriously scrutinized by our Chili Judges, Josh Sigley, Chris Ellison, and John Gustavsen who sampled all of the entries (Chili Bowl) which had to meet the criteria of Color, Aroma, Consistency, Taste, & Aftertaste, each category receiving a score a 1-10, then all categories tallied. Highest score wins.

Next year remember: There are only eight (8) entries for the Chili Bowl. Sign up is first come first serve. Additionally, anyone who brings a chili is eligible to participate in the Peoples Choice (no recipe restrictions)

Christ is the Son of God. He died to atone for men's sin, and after three days rose again. This is the most important fact in the universe. I die believing in Christ. -

-Watchman Nee

To abandon all, to strip one's self of all, in order to seek and follow Jesus Christ naked to Bethlehem where He was born, naked to the hall where He was scourged, and naked to Calvary where He died on the cross, is so great a mystery that neither the thing nor the knowledge of it, is given to any but through faith in the Son of God.--

John Wesley

The Blood deals with what we have done, whereas the Cross deals with what we are. The Blood disposes of our sins, while the Cross strikes at the root of our capacity for sin. --Watchman Nee

"Out, damned spot!" That is the true cry of human nature. That stain cannot be removed without blood, and that which is infinitely more, and deeper, and profounder, and more terrible than blood, of which blood is but the symbol - the suffering of Deity. --

G. Campbell Morgan

Today Jesus Christ is being dispatched as the Figurehead of a Religion, a mere example. He is that, but he is infinitely more; He is salvation itself, He is the Gospel of God.

Oswald Chambers

The nature of Christ's salvation is woefully misrepresented by the present-day evangelist. He announces a Savior from Hell rather than a Savior from sin. And that is why so many are fatally deceived, for there are multitudes who wish to escape the Lake of fire who have no desire to be delivered from their carnality and worldliness.

Arthur W. Pink

The Lord never came to deliver men from the consequences of their sins while yet those sins remained…Yet men, loving their sins and feeling nothing of their dread hatefulness, have, consistent with their low condition, constantly taken this word concerning the Lord to mean that he came to save them from the punishment of their sins.

George MacDonald

That is why He warned people to "count the cost" before becoming Christians. "Make no mistake," He says, "if you let me, I will make you perfect. The moment you put yourself in my hands, that is what you are in for. Nothing less, or other than that.

C.S. Lewis

All our salvation consists in the manifestation of the nature, life and spirit of Jesus Christ in our inward new man. This alone is Christian redemption, this alone delivers from the guilt and power of sin, this alone redeems and renews.

William Law

Union with Christ is really the central truth of the whole doctrine of salvation not only in its application but also in its once-for-all accomplishment in the finished work of Christ. Indeed the whole process of salvation has its origin in one phase of union with Christ and salvation has in view the realization of other phases of union with Christ.

John Murray

If you have eternal life at all, it simply means that you have the Son, Jesus Christ NOW! Eternal life is not a peculiar feeling inside! It is not your ultimate destination, to which you will go when you are dead. If you are born again, eternal life is that quality of life that you possess right now, at this very moment, in your own physical body, with your own two feet on the ground, and in the world TODAY! And where does this life come from? Of Him! He is that life! So if you have eternal life, it means that you have Somebody, Jesus Christ, and the life that you possess is of Him.

W. Ian Thomas
